What is GPM (gallons per minute)?

GPM (gallons per minute) is the volume of water delivered by a cleaning system per minute, measured in gallons, and when combined with PSI determines the cleaning force and speed of a job.

Gallons per minute, or GPM, refers to the volume of water a pressure washer or cleaning system delivers in one minute. It is the flow rate half of the equation that determines cleaning power. While pressure (measured in PSI) describes the force behind the water, GPM describes how much water is being pushed. Together, these metrics define how effectively and quickly a cleaning job gets done.

In practice, GPM directly affects job speed. A system with higher GPM moves water across a surface faster, covering more area in less time. For example, driveway washing or large surface cleaning jobs rely on sufficient GPM to work efficiently. A low-flow system may have high pressure but takes longer to clean the same square footage because less water is being delivered per minute.

Different cleaning tasks call for different GPM levels. Soft washing delicate surfaces like roof shingles or siding typically uses lower GPM (1-4 GPM) to avoid damage. Concrete and deck cleaning often requires moderate to higher GPM (3-5 GPM or more) to move dirt and debris. When evaluating pressure washing providers in Columbia, understanding their equipment GPM helps you estimate project timelines and match the right contractor to your job.
